For many years, I have been embedding industry-led challenges into the curriculum as part of a broader approach to employability-focused and authentic learning.
More recently, students on Sustainability and Digital Marketing in Practice engaged with the Cauldron Challenge alongside their assessed coursework. The challenge itself was not assessed, which created space for students to experiment, take risks, and focus on learning rather than grades. Students who completed the challenge received certificates recognising their engagement and problem-solving.
Feedback from last year was particularly encouraging. Students highlighted the interactive teaching approach and described the Cauldron Challenge as one of the most valuable parts of their learning experience, especially in helping them connect theory with real-world practice.
Curriculum design
This academic year, the Cauldron Challenge is being extended across multiple modules and levels. It is now being integrated into Emerging Technologies at undergraduate level, as well as Brand Management and Strategy and International Marketing Strategy at postgraduate level.
Learning approach
Rather than working towards a single right answer, students are encouraged to explore different approaches, test ideas, and develop individual solutions over time. The focus is on reflection, decision-making, and the development of employability-related skills.
Industry collaboration
At the end of the semester, students will share their individual responses, with selected solutions reviewed by our industry partner.
Thank you to Cauldron for the collaboration, and to our students for engaging so thoughtfully with the challenge!
